Where to Cool Off in Prescott This Summer
If you've moved to Prescott from Phoenix or Tucson, July probably feels like a revelation. Up here at nearly 5,400 feet, the heat is manageable in ways that simply aren't possible down in the Valley. But it's still summer in Arizona — the sun is strong, afternoons warm up, and knowing where to find shade, water, and relief makes the season a whole lot better.
Here's where Prescott locals go to cool down — from serene mountain lakes and water-adjacent hikes to community pools, splash pads, and lakeside picnics. Note: most of Prescott's lakes don't permit swimming, but they're gorgeous spots for kayaking, fishing, and easy walks.

Watson Lake
Prescott's crown jewel. Dramatic granite boulders rise from the water's edge — kayaking, paddleboarding, fishing, and hiking the shoreline loop are the main draws. Swimming is not permitted, but it's one of the most stunning spots in Arizona.

Surrounded by ponderosa pines, Lynx Lake is peaceful and less crowded. Swimming in designated spots, a gorgeous loop trail, and picnic tables under the trees.
Fishing + HikingWillow Lake
A locals' favorite for kayaking and birdwatching. Great blue herons, ospreys, and waterfowl are regulars. More peaceful than Watson on a summer weekend.
Paddling + WildlifeGranite Basin Lake
Tucked into ponderosa pines off Iron Springs Road. Cooler than lower elevations thanks to tree canopy and altitude. Kayaking, fishing, and the Granite Mountain trailhead nearby.

Goldwater Lake
A peaceful pine-ringed lake just south of downtown Prescott, popular for fishing, kayaking, and picnicking. No swimming is permitted, but the setting is gorgeous — old ponderosas right to the water's edge and a quiet atmosphere that feels worlds away from the highway. Great spot for an early morning walk or a slow afternoon.

Watson Lake Loop Trail
Winds through the Granite Dells along Watson Lake with striking views and spots to dip your feet in. Best before 9 a.m. in July.
Lynx Lake Loop Trail
An easy, shaded 5-mile loop through tall ponderosa pines with lake views throughout. One of the most forgiving summer hikes in the region. Dogs welcome on leash.
Watson Woods Riparian Preserve
A gentle, flat walk through cottonwood and willow forest along Granite Creek — Prescott's hidden gem for summer mornings. Genuinely shaded and rich with bird life.
Peavine Trail to Granite Basin
A flat rail trail running to Granite Basin Lake — shaded in sections, go as far as you like and turn back whenever you're ready. Water awaits at the end.
Goldwater Lake Loop Trails
A network of easy trails circles both upper and lower Goldwater Lake through tall ponderosa pines. The main loop is under 2 miles and almost entirely flat — perfect for a morning walk or an after-dinner stroll with the family. Multiple access points and shaded benches along the way.

Prescott Valley Civic Center Splash Pad
One of the most popular water play areas in the region. Spray features, open turf, and shaded seating. Free admission. Off Glassford Hill Road.

A free, family-friendly splash pad at A.C. Williams Granite Creek Park in downtown Prescott, conveniently located near the Hilton Garden Inn. Open June through September, it's one of the most accessible spots in the city — and it features an Augmentative and Alternative Communication Board, making it a welcoming destination for children with Autism. Proper swim attire required; water shoes suggested for little ones.

Courthouse Plaza
The historic heart of downtown, shaded by massive old-growth trees and surrounded by coffee shops, restaurants, and ice cream. One of the finest places to spend a slow summer afternoon anywhere in Arizona.

A lovely outdoor campus with native plant gardens, shaded walking paths, and rotating natural history exhibits. Peaceful, educational, and cooler than you'd expect.
Downtown Patios & Whiskey Row
Most of Prescott's downtown restaurants have covered outdoor seating that stays comfortable well into the afternoon. At elevation, even a shaded patio feels completely different than anything in the Valley.
