Your October Guide to Prescott, AZ: Events, Pumpkin Patches & Peak Fall Color
If you've been waiting for the best version of Prescott, October is it.
The monsoon season wraps up. The temperatures drop into something genuinely comfortable. The pines smell different. The light in the afternoon turns that specific golden color that makes the granite boulders look like they're glowing. And the town comes alive in a way that's hard to describe unless you've been here for it.
This is also the month that answers a question a lot of relocators ask: "What's it actually like to live in Prescott?" October gives you the answer better than any listing description or neighborhood map can.
Here's everything happening this month.
The Events
The Fall Show is the Plaza at its best. Over 100 local and regional vendors fill the historic Courthouse Square for two full days — handcrafted jewelry, fine art, pottery, textiles, woodwork, and specialty food, all set against the big elm canopy that shades the square in October light. The Prescott Regulators and their Shady Ladies put on a Wild West show on the gazebo stage. Families, couples, retirees, locals and visitors all mixed together on one of the best outdoor stages in the Southwest.
Saturday 9am–5pm · Sunday 9am–4pm · Free admission · Parking fills by mid-morning Saturday — go early.
Country music icon Gary Allan brings his current tour to the Findlay Toyota Center. If you haven't been to a show at the Findlay Center, it's a world-class venue for a regional market. A great excuse to make a night of it in Prescott Valley.
Heritage Park Zoo's annual fall celebration runs both days with a Zoo Maze, bounce house, photo spots, and animal enrichment activities. One of the most underrated family outings in the Prescott area — the zoo itself is a gem, and ZooFest makes it even more of a destination. Members free; non-members included with paid admission.
A Prescott Halloween tradition. Come in costume and trick-or-treat at stations throughout the sanctuary alongside the animals. Bring a flashlight for the nocturnal residents and the Boo Zone. Families with children 6 and under: gates open 5pm. All ages: 6pm. Last admission 8:30pm. Pre-purchase tickets online — it sells out most years.
Mortimer Farms Pumpkin Fest & Corn Maze
Mortimer Farms is 80 acres of fall, and October is their Super Bowl. Running through October 31 at 12907 E. State Route 169 in Dewey.
What's included with admission: The 15-acre corn maze (this year's theme: "Proud to Be a Farmer"), farm-inspired rides, zip lines, ropes course, animal encounter, and u-pick pumpkin fields. On weekends, add hayrides, grain train rides, pig races, a trick roper show, comedy juggling, and apple cider press demos.
Friday Night Barn Dance: Every Friday evening after dark. Fire dancers perform Friday and Saturday nights. The corn maze goes dark — same paths, completely different experience.
Pumpkins: Orange pumpkins 75¢/lb · Specialty pumpkins $1/lb. Pumpkin Valet holds your picks while you explore — brilliant if you're there with kids.
Halloween on Mount Vernon Avenue
If you have kids — or you just want to see Prescott do Halloween the way it does everything else, which is all the way — South Mount Vernon Avenue on October 31 is the answer.
Mount Vernon is one of the most celebrated trick-or-treat streets in Arizona, and it earns the reputation every year. The Victorian-era homes line up along tree-canopied blocks, and by 5:30pm the street fills with families, costumes, carved pumpkins, and porches doing it right. Walking-neighborhood Halloween at its best — the kind that doesn't happen in a lot of places anymore.
Pair it with Boo at the Zoo for a full Halloween evening: trick-or-treat at the zoo from 5–8:30pm, then walk Mount Vernon after.
Peak Fall Color: Where to Go in October
October is the month the trees actually commit. Here's where to go:
-
Goldwater Lake — Peak color typically arrives mid-to-late October. The loop trail winds through aspens, cottonwoods, maples, ash, and ponderosa pine. Go on a weekday if you can — weekends fill up once word gets out.
-
Lynx Lake — The loop around the lake is about a mile and one of the most reliable color displays near Prescott. Cottonwoods, willows, and oaks layer against the evergreens. Best in the second and third week of October.
-
Willow Lake west side — The cottonwood groves along the west shore near Willow Creek Road hit their peak in October. Quieter than the other spots and worth the short walk.
-
Watson Lake Peavine Trail — Scattered color along the creek corridor and open granite. Not peak foliage, but the combination of fall light, water, and rock is hard to beat at golden hour.
-
South Mount Vernon Avenue — The elm canopy over the historic homes reaches full color in October. A half-mile walk from the Courthouse Plaza and one of the most beautiful streets in Arizona this time of year.
October is the month I most often tell people to come visit if they're thinking about relocating. The weather is perfect. The events give you a real look at what this community does when it's just being itself. And the fall color makes the whole area look like somewhere people have put a lot of care into — because they have.
